Circulation Desk Volunteers Needed!
This volunteer position involves a lot of responsibility, including management of the library during your shift, library circulation desk functions using an automated circulation system, handling library materials, and basic library statistics. Examples of duties include checking books in and out, accurate shelving of library materials and accurate shelf reading, entering library statistics, assisting with inter-library loans, carrying out holds, answering or referring reference questions, answering the phone and taking messages, assisting patrons with using library computers and library copier and printer, collecting fees, opening and closing the library, participating in volunteer and director communications, and special projects.
We will train on all the details, including use of the automated circulation system.
Works under the general supervision of the Library Director and senior volunteers, although after training this supervision may be indirect and conducted through notes, emails, phone calls, and occasional one-on-one meetings.
Knowledge, Skills, Commitment, and Abilities
–Ability to make a one-year commitment (due to intensive and ongoing training) to volunteering two hours per week for a particular library shift, and to be rock solid responsible for your library shift, making advance arrangements for the occasional absence;
-Friendliness, ability to communicate effectively and courteously with other staff and the general public, ability and desire to serve the public of all ages;
-Good ability to work both self-directed and as a team member;
-Good ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions;
-Good ability to pay attention to detail;
-Good computer skills, including email and other applications;
-Good knowledge of English and an interest in books and reading.
